Video: Clinton on Vermont Guns

This week’s fact-checking video by CNN’s Jake Tapper is on Hillary Clinton’s claim about guns from Vermont being “used in crimes and violence and killings in New York.”

Clinton said, “Most of the guns that are used in crimes and violence and killings in New York come from out of state. And the state that has the highest per capita number of those guns that end up committing crimes in New York come from Vermont.”

Clinton’s claim leaves the misleading impression that the home state of her opponent, Sen. Bernie Sanders, is a major source of guns used in crimes in New York. But 4,585 guns recovered in New York were traced to the first retail sale in 2014 and only 55 of them came from Vermont, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. That’s 1.2 percent.

Tapper’s latest video — which is part of our collaboration with CNN’s “State of the Union” — is based on our item, “Clinton’s Vermont Gun Stat.” All of the videos in the series can be found on our website.
