Thanksgiving became a national holiday in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln declared it would be celebrated on the last Thursday of November. President Franklin Roosevelt later declared that Thanksgiving would be the fourth Thursday of the month, a change he said would encourage earlier holiday shopping.
