Mailbag: Manufacturing Jobs and Fidel Castro

This week, readers sent us letters about President Barack Obama’s record on manufacturing jobs, and Sen. Ted Cruz’s claim that Obama praised the late Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

Obama’s Record on Manufacturing Jobs

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said that 805,000 manufacturing jobs have been created since President Barack Obama has been in office. In fact, there has been a net loss of 303,000 manufacturing jobs since January 2009.

Obama Oversells U.S. Economy

In a recent speech, President Obama criticized Republicans for making claims about the economy and health care that are “not supported by the facts.” But Obama resorted to some spin of his own.

Trump’s ‘Made in the USA’ Spin

Farley discussed these statements made by the president in his annual speech to Congress:

“[O]ver the past five years, our businesses have created more than 11 million new jobs.”
The United States is “the only advanced country on Earth that doesn’t guarantee paid sick leave.”
The U.S. is the “only advanced country on Earth that doesn’t guarantee … paid maternity leave to our workers.”
“[M]ore than half of manufacturing executives have said they’re actively looking to bring jobs back from China.”
